Neurofeedback is a comprehensive system that promotes change at the cellular level of the brain and empowers the client to use his or her mind as a tool for healing. Trainees often report relief from symptoms related to depression, anxiety, PTSD, addictions and unresolved emotional issues. Neurofeedback training is also known to promote a state of focused relaxation that has benefited those with attention deficit disorder (ADHD), learning disorders, OCD, and traumatic brain injury. Other disorders that have responded well to neurotherapy include epilepsy, headaches, and chronic fatigue, etc....
A growing number of health care providers have made neurotherapy their primary treatment modality, whereas others have made it a part of a larger clinical practice.

TARGET AUDIENCE (Who should participate?)

Our program is designed for health care professionals who are state certified or licensed in their chosen field including: medical and naturopathic doctors as well as psychologists, social workers, counselors, physical/occupational therapists, registered nurses, chiropractors, credentialed special education teachers and school counselors working in a school environment. Others who may not meet the above qualifications; but may also benefit from this training, include graduate students, as well as the staff of a neurofeedback practice. Specific questions about certification should be directed to BCIA.

How can I prepare?

Read Part I of the book: Getting Started with Neurofeedback. It will lay the groundwork for the information you will soon be processing and later using in a clinical setting. The practice of neurofeedback has numerous technical terms. A few short hours of reading will help you to absorb what is to come. (Please bring your book to the workshop)

COURSE PURPOSE (Workshop summary)

John N Demos, author of Getting Started with Neurofeedback, is the presenter. His 4-day BCIA (EEG) accredited workshop is the first step in the certification process. It has been designed to meet the 36-hours of required learning outlined by BCIA. This workshop covers the foundation and rationale for neurofeedback. You will learn the history of neurotherapy and how it has evolved into present day clinical practice as well as the basics of assessment, treatment planning, and training with neurofeedback equipment. Attendees will be given an understanding of the electrical activity of the brain and how it influences cognition and behavior. Your learning experience will be enhanced by video presentations, illustrations as well as hands-on experience. Participants will be introduced to two different types of neurofeedback systems. The Vermont based workshop offers individualized training because classes are limited to 5-10 professionals. The Ohio based workshop will introduce you to Tom Collura and other representatives of BrainMaster, Inc. Please bring Getting Started with Neurofeedback to the workshop.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The participant will be able to:

1. Record and tabulate the EEG from various International 10-20 locations with EEG biofeedback equipment. 2. Identify the normal EEG by interpreting 2-dimensional graphics.
3. Identify EEG signatures or brain wave patterns that reflect various disorders.
4. Discuss indications and contraindications for therapy in order to identify those who will benefit the most from neurofeedback training.
5. Locate artifacts in the EEG that are caused by scalp muscles and eye movements.
6. Reduce artifacts in the EEG recording.
7. Discuss the application of EEG-biofeedback to various disorders such as ADHD, Depression, Anxiety and mild traumatic brain injury.
8. Organize and write training plans that relate to those same disorders.

Price: Complimentary workshop
(Free for all those attending the advertised workshop)

Instructor:
Bill Mrklas, BrainMaster equipment specialist.

One-Day: Equipment Orientation and set-up for BrainMaster users.

9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Lunch 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Bill Mrklas is BrainMaster's prime equipment specialist. His workshop is designed to help BrainMaster owners to interface BrainMaster equipment with user Laptops. The basics of uploading BrainMaster software and hardware will be considered. If you have just purchased an Atlantis, Bill will help you to get started and to learn the basics of equipment operation. He will also present a detailed review of BrainMaster software operation.

New users of BrainMaster will not only benefit from Bill's expertise with the new Atlantis hardware, but they well also find him to be very helpful with computer issues. New users often many questions such as:

Why can't I see all of my recorded data?
How does BrainMaster software save client data?
How can I archive old files or email new ones to mentors?
How can I get the most from the review page?
What is the purpose of the artifact threshold and how can I change it on the fly?
When is the proper time to use notch filters?
How can I save my raw EEG data?
What's the best way to download updates for BrainMaster?
What are those flashing impedance lights on the new Atlantis?
What is the Event Wizard and how can I use it?

By all means bring your equipment questions to the workshop and expect to recieve top level support from Bill Mrklas.

Tom Collura presents: Technical foundations of Neurofeedback

Technical Foundations of Neurofeedback
Thomas Collura,  Ph.D
.
This workshop will describe the technical foundations of the practice of neurofeedback, including the neurophysiological, electronic, and computer aspects. A signal is traced from its origin in the brain, through the instrumentation, until a visual or auditory feedback signal is presented to the trainee. Principles to be covered include amplifier characteristics, digitization, filtering, graphics and sound, and feedback algorithms. Technical data in the form of digital traces, timing measurements, and statistical summaries, will be presented and discussed. Material covered will not be specific to any particular instrument, and will pertain to all types of equipment.

Each participant will have the opportunity to articulate the technical foundations of EEG neurofeedback, including neurophysiology, electronics, signal processing, and user-interfacing. Understand specifications such as bandwidth, accuracy, and response time, in scientific and engineering terms.
